Role: Co-creator, Graphic Design, Audio Editing | Project: What Am Politics? Podcast
When it comes to understanding political issues, I am is a self confessed toddler. That’s why I enlisted the help of Steve, my politically savvy drinking buddy, to help me understand how government effects our everyday lives and our interactions with each other.
Every other week we record a podcast over Skype where we take a political topic or issue and use humour, empathy, and research to break it down in a fun and irreverent way.
I took this side project as an opportunity to have some fun with the branding. Politics is, generally, a very heavy and polarizing subject. With this show we wanted to convey a more open and light hearted tone to help act as an easy entry point for those new to political discourse.
In addition to the art direction, I am also responsible for the audio production and editing of the show. I take pride in striving to make the show feel like it's recorded in a studio as opposed to over Skype in our bedrooms.
For the theme music, I worked with California based musician, Supermarket Love, to create a theme that matched the overall tone of the show. I provided him with reference tracks and some guidance on instrumentation and tone. What he created really feels like a musical extension of the show's voice.
The show is available on iTunes and other podcasting apps. Users can also choose to listen to the episode and experience more supporting content, such as out blog posts, on our website.
I try to create new and bespoke artwork for each episode of the show. These get used on the site and on our social channels to promote each new release. I usually work on these in between the edit and the upload. This doesn't leave a huge amount of time but makes for some fun, and frequent, design challenges.
